Overview

Morocco's defining circuit from north to south: Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara at Merzouga, High Atlas, Marrakech and the Atlantic coast — twelve days with one dedicated driver-guide and hand-picked accommodation throughout.

This is the journey for travellers who have one chance to see Morocco properly. Twelve days, one private vehicle, one dedicated English-speaking driver-guide, and a hand-picked sequence of riads, kasbahs, desert camps and Atlantic guesthouses that span the entire country from the Strait of Gibraltar to the edge of the Sahara.

We start in Tangier — Morocco's most cosmopolitan city, where literary ghosts haunt the café terraces — and move south through the blue medina of Chefchaouen, east to the medieval labyrinth of Fes, south through the High Atlas and down into the Sahara at Erg Chebbi, then west again across the rose valleys to Marrakech and on to the windswept Atlantic coast at Essaouira. Every great landscape, every great culture, every great style of Moroccan hospitality in one coherent private journey.

The pacing is generous: two nights in Fes, two nights in the Sahara, two nights in Marrakech. Nothing feels rushed; every overnight is inside a medina or a desert camp, never in an airport hotel. This itinerary is fully customisable — we have run it hundreds of times and know every variation.

Trip highlights

  • Tangier kasbah and Beat Generation cafés with a literary historian
  • Two slow days inside Chefchaouen's blue medina — sunrise before the crowds
  • Two full days in Fes el-Bali, the world's oldest living medina
  • Roman Volubilis at golden hour with a private archaeologist
  • Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka and sleep in Aït Ben Haddou (UNESCO)
  • Two nights in Erg Chebbi — camel ride at golden hour, dune sunrise climb
  • Marrakech medina, Jardin Majorelle and a couples' hammam ritual
  • Two nights in Essaouira — Portuguese ramparts, sardines on the port

Private transfer from Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport or the Tangier-Ville ferry terminal to a riad inside the kasbah. Riad in Tangier kasbah
  2. 2

Day 2 · Tangier: kasbah and the literary city

    Tangier old city

Full day with our Tangier historian: the American Legation museum (the only US national monument abroad), the kasbah palace, the Socco Chico cafés of Bowles and Burroughs. Lunch at Gran Café de Paris on the Grand Socco. Afternoon at leisure in the medina.

    Riad in Tangier kasbah B · L

  4. 4

Day 4 · Chefchaouen: sunrise walk and Spanish mosque hike

  5. 5

    Day 5 · Chefchaouen → Volubilis → Fes

    Roman ruins · 200km

  6. 6

Day 6 · Fes el-Bali with the medieval historian

    Fes medina

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is "The Ultimate Morocco Grand Tour — 12 Days" private or a group tour?

100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.

Can I change the dates or itinerary?

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate. Expect 2–4 hours of light walking per day and one or two longer driving days. We pace days carefully and stop often.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.

Is twelve days the right length, or should we do ten or fourteen?

Twelve days is the sweet spot for a complete north-to-south circuit without rushed days. Ten days requires dropping either Tangier/Chefchaouen or Essaouira. Fourteen days lets you add a second Sahara day, a slower Fes and a longer Atlantic stay. We re-quote any length variation in 24 hours.

Can we start in Marrakech instead of Tangier?

Easily — we reverse the itinerary to start in Marrakech and end in Tangier, which suits clients flying into Marrakech and out via a Tangier–Europe ferry or flight. Many clients also start in Casablanca: a high-speed train to Tangier in 2h 10min, then join the circuit at Day 1.

Which season is best for this circuit?

October to April is ideal: the Sahara is warm rather than extreme, the Atlas passes are clear (heavy snow can close Tizi n'Tichka in January), and all the medinas are at their most comfortable. Spring (March–April) is our personal favourite — wildflowers on the Atlas, green Draa valley, cool desert mornings.
