Overview

Four gentle days designed for families: a private medina walk at a child's pace, a camel ride in the Palmeraie, a Berber cooking morning in the Ourika valley, and two days on the Atlantic coast at Essaouira — beaches, ramparts and sardines on the port.

We've run this itinerary for families with children from four years old to sixteen, and the secret is simple: we never rush, we always eat on time, and we keep the driving short. No day has more than three hours on the road; every destination has something that works for both the adults and the children.

Marrakech's medina is extraordinary but overwhelming — we walk it with a guide who knows the quiet routes, stops at a cookie shop and a mint tea ceremony, and avoids the crowded main squares. The Ourika valley is a natural adventure playground: stepping stones, goats, saffron fields and a waterfall hike that most children manage well. Essaouira is a beach city; the wind makes it safe for young children on the sand, and the fishing port (cats, boats, sardines) is endlessly entertaining. Camel rides are kept short and gentle — 20 minutes — and we brief the handlers to pace carefully with families.

Trip highlights

  • Private medina walk at child's pace — cookie shop, mint tea, hidden courtyards
  • 20-minute gentle camel ride in the Marrakech Palmeraie
  • Berber cooking morning in the Ourika valley — children shape the bread
  • Setti Fatma waterfall walk — stepping stones, easy scramble, natural pools
  • Two nights in Essaouira — wide beaches, safe Atlantic surf, fresh sardines on the port
  • Ramparts walk and Portuguese fortifications — history brought alive for children

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

Day 1 · Marrakech: medina and camel ride

    Marrakech

Morning airport pickup and check-in at a family-friendly riad with a courtyard pool. After lunch, a private medina walk with a guide who specialises in children's history — the palace of the pasha, a secret garden, a spice souk stop where the children blend their own ras el hanout to take home. Late afternoon camel ride in the Palmeraie: 20 minutes, gentle handlers, photos at every stop.

Day 2 · Ourika valley: cooking and waterfalls

Ourika valley · 45km from Marrakech

Drive south into the Atlas foothills. Morning cooking class with a Berber family: the children shape msemen pancakes, stir the harira soup, and chase chickens in the courtyard. Lunch on the river terrace of what they cooked. Afternoon walk up the Setti Fatma gorge to the waterfalls — stepping stones and a short scramble; most children from age six manage easily. Back in Marrakech by early evening.

    Day 3 · Marrakech → Argan Road → Essaouira

    via argan forest · 190km

Morning departure west. Stop at an argan forest where goats famously climb the trees to eat the fruit (a genuine if unusual sight). Visit a women's cooperative; children press their own argan oil in a small hand-press. Arrive in Essaouira by early afternoon. First hour on the Atlantic beach — wide, sandy and safe for children to run. Sardine grill on the port for dinner; the children watch the fishermen unload the catch.

Day 4 · Essaouira beach morning → Marrakech

Coast to Red City · 190km

Free morning on the beach or ramparts — Essaouira's Portuguese fortifications are exactly the right scale for children to explore. Late-morning drive back to Marrakech via a different argan valley route. Drop-off at your riad or airport by mid-afternoon.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is "Morocco for Families" private or a group tour?

100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.

Can I change the dates or itinerary?

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.

What is the minimum age for children on this tour?

We've run this itinerary with children as young as three. The medina walk is short (never more than 90 minutes on foot), the camel ride is very gentle and brief, the waterfall walk can be skipped entirely if needed, and Essaouira's beach is wide and safe. We adjust every activity to the youngest child in the group.

Are the riads child-friendly?

We only book family-friendly riads — ones with a courtyard pool that can be secured, cots available on request, and kitchens that will prepare simple children's meals if the tagine menu doesn't suit. All have ground-floor rooms or lifts; no narrow spiral staircase surprises.

Is this itinerary suitable for grandparents travelling with grandchildren?

Excellent for multi-generational groups. The difficulty is set to 'Easy' throughout: all medina walking is on flat or gently sloping lanes, the camel ride is 20 minutes, and the waterfall walk is optional. We've run this with grandparents in their 70s and grandchildren aged five; the pace is entirely in your control.
