Overview
Three luxurious days without a long drive: two nights at a design lodge in the Agafay stone desert 30 minutes from Marrakech, a High Atlas foothills ride, a private hammam, and an optional sunrise balloon at dawn on the second day.
The Agafay is Marrakech's own desert — a lunar landscape of pale stone and eroded ridges with the snow-capped Atlas as a backdrop, just 30 minutes by car from the medina. It's not a sand Sahara; it's more dramatic in its own way: a vast grey and ochre plateau that empties of visitors by nightfall and fills with silence and stars.
We base this three-day break at a design lodge on the plateau edge — one of the most architecturally striking properties in Morocco, with private plunge pools, a spa, and a rooftop that catches the Atlas sunrise. Days are yours to fill: a guided quad-bike or horse ride across the plateau, a sunset camel walk, an optional pre-dawn balloon flight over the medina (we add this to the quote if you'd like it), a full-day Atlas foothills circuit by 4x4, or simply a long private hammam and a day beside the pool. No rushing. No long drives. Just Morocco's most accessible luxury escape.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Is "Agafay & the Atlas — A Luxury Short Break" private or a group tour?
100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.
Can I change the dates or itinerary?
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.
How fit do I need to be?
Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.
When should I book?
For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.
What is the Agafay desert, and how is it different from the Sahara?
The Agafay is a rocky plateau of pale stone and dry riverbeds — a stone desert rather than a sand desert. It sits at 600m elevation with a direct view of the High Atlas snow-peaks. It lacks the towering dunes of the Sahara but has its own austere beauty, and its proximity to Marrakech (30 minutes) makes it perfect for a short break without a long drive.
Can the hot-air balloon be included in the base price?
The balloon is priced separately because not every guest wants it, and its scheduling depends on weather. We can include it as part of your package at a fixed per-person rate — simply tell us at booking. If the balloon is cancelled due to wind (rare but possible), we refund in full or reschedule.
Is quad biking safe, and are there alternatives if we prefer not to ride?
Quad biking on the Agafay plateau is low-speed and guided — suitable for first-timers. We always brief riders carefully and no off-road experience is needed. If you prefer not to ride quads, we substitute a horse ride or a guided walk across the plateau; the landscape is equally beautiful on foot or horseback.
