Overview

Three private days covering Morocco's two most compelling northern cities: a full day in Fes el-Bali with a medieval historian, the blue medina of Chefchaouen with a sunrise walk, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis at golden hour — all in a circular loop from Fes.

This compact three-day loop makes the most of Morocco's north without long drives. You base in Fes — the medieval capital — for one full day with a university-trained historian, covering the Karaouine mosque-university (the world's oldest, founded 859 AD), the Chouara tanneries and the kissaria textile souk. Then north-west to Chefchaouen, a blue-washed Berber city tucked into the Rif mountains: an overnight that earns you the sunrise walk the day-trippers never see. On the return to Fes, we stop at Volubilis — Morocco's finest Roman site — in late afternoon when the triumphal arch and mosaic floors are bathed in amber light and the tourist coaches have gone.

This is a natural extension before or after our Sahara circuits, or a self-contained cultural weekend for travellers flying into and out of Fes.

Trip highlights

  • Sunrise walk through the empty blue alleys before any day-tripper arrives
  • Hike to the Spanish mosque viewpoint above the blue rooftops
  • Volubilis Roman ruins in golden-hour light — intact triumphal arch and mosaics

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is "Fes & Chefchaouen Northern Loop — 3 Days" private or a group tour?

100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own driver, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.

Can I change the dates or itinerary?

Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Add a day, swap a riad, change the start city — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.

How fit do I need to be?

Easy. Light walking on medina cobblestones, plus optional activities you can opt in or out of on the day.

When should I book?

For high season (Oct–Apr) and any trip involving the Sahara or hot-air balloon, book 8–12 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 14 days) is usually still possible with a phone call.

Can this loop be done starting and ending in Marrakech?

Yes — we add a high-speed train leg from Marrakech to Fes (4h 20min in first class, which we book for you) or a private driver transfer to join the circuit. Many clients fly into Marrakech, take the morning train to Fes, do the three-day northern loop, and return to Marrakech by train. We'll re-quote the full arrangement.

Is Volubilis worth seeing compared to European Roman sites?

Volubilis is not as grand as Rome or Pompeii, but the setting is unique — an isolated hilltop above olive groves with the Atlas in the distance — and the lack of crowds makes it extraordinary. The mosaic floors of the Gordian Palace are among the finest in North Africa. In golden-hour light it is genuinely beautiful; most visitors are gone by 17:00.

Why return to Fes on night 3 rather than ending in Chefchaouen?

Fes airport (FEZ) serves far more international routes than Chefchaouen. Ending in Fes gives you flexibility for an early morning flight home, an onward train south, or simply a relaxed last evening in the world's oldest medina. If your onward journey is from Tangier or the ferry, we end there instead — just let us know at booking.
