Mirleft is a small Berber coastal village of roughly 5,000 on Morocco's south-western Atlantic coast, about 80 km south of Tiznit and 170 km south of Agadir. It sits on a cliff-top plateau above a series of sheltered sandy coves cut into red sandstone, each accessible by foot or rough track and largely undeveloped — the combination of cliff scenery, wild surf, empty beaches and a genuine village atmosphere has made Mirleft one of the Atlantic coast's most sought-after discoveries for surfers, walkers and slow-travel visitors. The village itself centres on a small souk, a handful of guesthouses and café terraces overlooking the ocean; below the cliffs, four or five named beaches — including Plage des Nationales, Plage Aftas and Plage de Mirleft — offer a range of conditions from sheltered swimming to experienced-level surf breaks.

What to see

Highlights of Mirleft

01

Which beaches are best around Mirleft?

The most accessible beach is Plage des Nationales, 2 km below the village — a sheltered south-facing cove ideal for swimming. Plage Aftas, 4 km north, is a longer west-facing beach with consistent beach-break surf. Plage de l'Eglise and Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah cove to the south offer more isolation. All are reached by rough tracks from the cliff-top road.

02

Cliff-top walking between coves

A network of paths follows the cliff edge north and south of Mirleft, connecting the beaches through argan scrub and sandy bluffs — one of the most rewarding coastal walks on the Moroccan Atlantic, with frequent views down to rock arches and stacks carved by the swell.

03

Argan forest and Anti-Atlas interior

Behind the cliff-top, the argan-forest plateau of the Souss-Massa extends inland — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the world's only natural argan habitats. Women's cooperatives in the nearby villages of Aday and Imi Ouaddar produce argan oil and amlou (argan-almond paste) sold locally.

04

Sunset from the café terraces

Mirleft's cliff-top cafés face directly west over the open Atlantic — the sunset views, particularly in autumn when the sky clears after swell events, are among the finest on the Moroccan coast.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: About 2h (170 km) south of Agadir on the N1 via Tiznit, then the R108 coastal road
  • Infrastructure: Small village — a handful of guesthouses and cafés; no hotels. Bring cash; ATMs in Tiznit (30 km north)
  • Best combined with: Tiznit (silversmithing town 30 km north), Sidi Ifni and Legzira (30 km south)
  • Beach access: Rough tracks to most coves — any car can reach the main beaches; the furthest coves need high clearance

FAQ

Mirleft — common questions

Is Mirleft safe for swimming?+

The sheltered south-facing coves — particularly Plage des Nationales — are calm and safe for swimming in summer. The open west-facing beaches have Atlantic rip currents that require caution; local knowledge and visible flags where posted should be followed. Outside peak summer the Atlantic swell can be powerful.

Is Mirleft good for beginner surfers?+

It is better suited to intermediate and experienced surfers — the breaks are beach-break Atlantic waves that can be powerful and unforgiving. Taghazout, 170 km north, has better-managed beginner facilities. Mirleft rewards confident ocean swimmers and intermediate-to-advanced surfers.

How far is Mirleft from Tiznit?+

About 30 km south on the R108 coastal road — roughly 35 minutes. Tiznit is the nearest town with ATMs, a petrol station and regular supplies; Mirleft itself is small with limited services.
