Region

Western Sahara · Far South Morocco

Dakhla is a peninsula town on Morocco's far-southern Atlantic coast, roughly 1,700 km south of Casablanca and 550 km south of Agadir, extending into a 40 km lagoon sheltered from the open ocean by a narrow sand tongue. The lagoon's flat, waist-deep water and persistent north-easterly trade winds (the alizé) have made Dakhla one of the world's premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations, attracting riders from Europe, the Americas and beyond between November and April. Beyond the water sports the landscape is dramatic: pink flamingos feed on the lagoon shallows, the surrounding hammada stretches to the horizon in every direction, and the fish served at the simple port restaurants — brought in fresh each morning — rank among the finest on the Moroccan coast.

What to see

Highlights of Dakhla

01

What makes Dakhla's lagoon ideal for kitesurfing?

The Dakhla lagoon offers flat, shin-to-waist-deep water, a sandy bottom and the steady north-easterly alizé blowing at 20–35 knots most mornings — conditions that allow beginners to progress quickly and advanced riders to practise freestyle and foiling manoeuvres without ocean swell.

02

Flamingo spotting on the lagoon edge

Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) feed in the shallows of the southern lagoon year-round, with numbers peaking in winter. A short 4x4 drive south of town brings you to the flats at Imlili, where hundreds of birds can be watched at close range.

03

Fresh Atlantic seafood at the port

Dakhla's fishing fleet brings in sea bream, grouper, octopus and sea bass each morning. The simple restaurants at the port grill fish to order; the catch-of-the-day set menu is one of the best-value meals in Morocco.

04

Sand-dune day trips and desert sunsets

The hammada east of the lagoon gives way to crescent dunes accessible by 4x4; the vast, empty landscape at sunset — with the lagoon glowing below — is the visual centrepiece of a Dakhla stay.

  • Kitesurf season: November–April for reliable 20–35-knot trade winds; May–October sees lighter, variable wind — better for SUP and kayaking
  • Currency and connectivity: Moroccan dirham (MAD); mobile 4G coverage in town; most kite centres and hotels have Wi-Fi
  • Visas: Morocco's standard visa rules apply — visa-free for EU, UK, US, CA and AU nationals up to 90 days

FAQ

Dakhla — common questions

Is Dakhla suitable for beginner kitesurfers?+

Yes — the flat lagoon, sandy bottom and consistent but not overpowering trade winds make Dakhla one of the best places in the world to learn. Most IKO-certified schools on the lagoon offer 9–12 hour beginner courses; students typically reach independent riding standard within a week.

What is the best time of year to visit Dakhla?+

November through April delivers the most consistent wind (20–35 knots most days) and comfortable air temperatures of 20–26°C. May to October is quieter, lighter on wind, and popular with travellers seeking empty beaches and solitude rather than sport.

Is Dakhla safe and politically stable?+

Yes — Dakhla is under Moroccan administration and is one of the safest towns in the country. Security is visible, infrastructure has been heavily invested in over the past decade, and the town receives several thousand European tourists annually without incident.

How far is Dakhla from Marrakech?+

About 1,700 km by road — a two-day drive. The practical approach is to fly from Casablanca to Dakhla (2h30), or to build Dakhla as an add-on at the start or end of a broader Morocco itinerary using the Royal Air Maroc domestic network.
